Performers, audio engineers, KPOV/Bend Roots volunteers and
all Revival helpers: welcome to the Bend Roots family!
Artists: by performing at the 2011 Bend Roots Revival you agree to allow your performances to be broadcast on KPOV. Please remember this is a family, radio-friendly show!
As our festival grows its important we remember our mission: to nurture and promote
performing arts in Bend.We are the artists and poets and musicians and support crew.Through the Bend Roots Revival, we have
an opportunity to help our community realize this goal.
Most Revival stages are not staffed with full-time sound
technicians, so it is important we help each other sound-check, move gear on
and off stage, and stay on schedule. In most cases, if you have an hour slot you will have a half-hour to set
up; and if you have a half-hour slot you have an hour to set up.
When sound checking PLEASE be conscious and courteous of neighbor stage performers.
Those who’ve done the Roots Fest in the past know while one act is playing, one
is setting up near by… This is totally doable and also requires total community
effort and awareness.
Unless there is a “designated sound man” for your stage, we ask you to run it
as you would in your garage: vocals are the main thing to get in the PA, but it is
probably not necessary to mic guitar and bass amps, or to be too excessive
trying to capture all of your drummers ability in stereo.Keep it simple and focus on creating a
good stage sound.
If you don’t see what you need listed for gear provided at your stage, this
means you need to augment our system by bringing it yourself: an extra DI box,
mics for your 7 chanters, whatever… we need help completing the show.
There are three distinct performance areas (the Lower Level, the Upper Level
& the Century Center Ballroom) plus the Acoustic Room.
The Lower Level is home to the BIGS
stage and the Sawpit.Access to these stages for load-in/out is off Commerce Ave. The BIGS Stage is run by Sonic
Solutions, is well fortified with the basics, and Drew Kelleher is your sound man.
The Sawpit will be stocked with PA,
2 mains on stands, 2 monitors, 2 vocal mics/stands/cables and one DI.
The Upper Level is home to Dave’s
Garage and Casey’s Corner.Access to these stages for load-in/out
is also off of Commerce Ave.
Dave’s Garage will be run by my good
friend Linken Olsen with assistance from me and Patrick Pearsall. This stage will be equipped with 2 mains and 3 monitors, 2 DI boxes, and 4 vocal mics/stands/cables. Linken is your sound man here.
The gear and audio guidance for Casey’s
Corner is provided to us by our friend Ken Czpelka. And while he will do his best to
assist, he is NOT a full time sound man.Casey’s Corner will be
stocked with PA, 2 mains on stands, 2 monitors, 2 vocal mics/stands/cables and
one DI.
The Century Center Ballroom is located in-doors (adjacent to the Upper Level
performance area), and is home to the Century
Center Stage and the Silver Moon
Stage. Load in/out for these stages is accessed from the large parking
lot on the south side of Century Center next to Mail Boxes Etc. behind the new
US Bank.
Until 8 PM The Century Center Stage
will not have a designated sound man: but will be fortified throughout the
day with PA, 2 mains on stands, 2 monitors, 2 vocal mics/stands/cables and one
DI.
After 8 PM Chris George is overseeing the sound on the Century Center Stage. For Ransom Band, Jukebot, Ruins of Ooah
and Empty Space Orchestra, Chris is your sound man.
The Silver Moon Stage
will be fortified with PA, 2 mains on stands, 2 monitors, 2 vocal
mics/stands/cables and one DI.
Finally, there is the Acoustic Room,
a very intimate zone on your left as you enter the Upper Level.Band load-in/out access to the Acoustic
Room is from the festival main entrance.
The Acoustic Room
will be equipped with a very small PA System, main speakers, and one vocal
mic/stand/cable.This room is
designed as a "chill space" for workshops, ambient acoustic music and
experimental jams.
Thanks much for your help putting on this huge event!
Any questions or input please don’t hesitate to call me.
Looking forward to a great Revival!
All the best,

Bend Roots Revival Community Music Festival in its 5th year and “growing” strong
If you have ever had the opportunity to visit Bend, Oregon,
nestled in the high desert of Central Oregon near the Cascade Mountains, you
know what a unique and wonderful place it is. In describing this vibrant
community words such as energetic, eclectic, peaceful, hip, artsy, natural,
diverse and even spiritual come to mind. For the fifth straight year,
September 23-26, The Bend Roots Revival will take these words and set them to
music for a four day community celebration of the performing arts.
A project of 88.9 KPOV Bend Community Radio, the Revival is a
free annual event showcasing regional performers and educational workshops.
Growing by leaps and bounds, this year’s event is poised to breakthrough to the
next level with a move to a larger and more versatile venue, Century Center (off
14th in the heart of Bend), and the addition of several new sponsors and local
supporters.
In describing the Festival’s new home, event founder and creative
director, Mark Ransom indicated “It is our hope that this will be the permanent
‘Fairgrounds’ for the event, and that each season we will continue to customize
the space, adding artistic features, staging, lighting, sound and decor that
will be used for the Revival—and for other events throughout the year.”
The heart and soul of this one of a kind event is the true sense
of “community” embodied by the organizers, volunteers, supporters, participants
and attendees. An assemblage of items from tents and stages to sound
systems, art supplies, lighting, signage, and even a solar powered trailer (yes,
in 2009 the main stage was powered by the sun!) seem to sprout from the ground
each year to provide everything needed for the festival to run. In
reality it is grass roots support, not mystical good fortune which connects the
setting, the people, the food, the music and the vibe that bring the festival
to life each year.
If you go, don’t worry that the music might not be your style,
because there is truly something for everyone. Blues, jazz, rock, funk,
bluegrass, country, singer/songwriter, orchestral space jams and even a touch
of classical graced the stages in 2009. With 70 acts in 2009, this year’s
event is faced with the reality that not everyone can be included as the event
grows. As Ransom commented, “The popularity of Bend Roots has definitely
made performance slots more coveted.
At the end of the day growth is inevitable for any event which has
experienced such immediate success and taps so deeply in to the core of music
and arts in the community. The challenge going forward will be for
organizers to hold tight to the values and spirit which continue to define the
event while embracing the opportunities growth and change unveil. The
foundation is there, the vision continues to evolve and the music plays on.
As Ransom’s cousin Eric wrote in an original song called “The Revival”,
“Tell your neighbor, tell your mother, tell your sister and your brother - tell
everyone you meet they got to come on down and see the Revival”.
