KPOV Awarded $112,000 Federal Matching Grant for Full Power Radio

FCC Also Approves New Location for Transmitter to Better Serve Region

106.7 KPOV, Bend Community Radio, has been awarded a $112,000 federal matching grant for the station’s expansion from low power to full power broadcasting in 2011, and has received approval for a new transmitter location that will better serve the region.

Full power broadcasting will dramatically increase the reach of KPOV to Central Oregon listeners well beyond Bend. The $112,000 matching grant from the Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP), a program of the US Department of Commerce, is half the cost of building the new full power station; the other half must be raised from local supporters.

The new Pine Mountain site for the transmitter, approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will ensure even better coverage in Central Oregon than the original location approved in 2008.

This matching grant and better location for our full power transmitter are a huge opportunity for community radio in Central Oregon.  Our listeners, donors and underwriters have said loud and clear that you want homegrown community radio. The months ahead will be an exciting phase in  extending community radio beyond Bend to Central Oregon.

Stay tuned for updates!

The FCC has awarded KPOV a full power construction permit!

On October 22, 2007, 106.7 KPOV filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for a construction permit to build a full power, non-commercial, educational radio station serving Bend and other nearby communities in Central Oregon on 88.9fm. Approximately 3400 other organizations across the country also applied for full power permits.

On June 9, 2008, the FCC granted KPOV a three-year construction permit. Approximately 250 of the over 3,400 applicants last fall have received actual permits to-date and KPOV is one of the first low-power fm stations to receive its permit.
