September 23rd, 24th, 25th and 26th... THE FIFTH ANNUAL BEND ROOTS REVIVAL:
A CELEBRATION OF PERFORMING ARTS IN BEND 2010

Showcasing 100 free performances and educational workshops, The Bend Roots Revival is an enormous ritual which occurs every September in Bend, Oregon.  Literally thousands from our community participate.  In a world where we have lost many of the rituals and traditions which connect us to the natural world and to each other, the Revival is a truly amazing boon!

A bit different from other festivals, The Revival blurs the lines between performer and revivalist by inviting everyone to join-in.  We come to the Revival to swim in a current of pure creative energy.

THE NEW HOME OF THE BEND ROOTS REVIVAL IS CENTURY CENTER.
WHERE IS CENTURY CENTER???

To get there from Parrilla Grill and The Victorian Cafe: head south on 14th Street (Century Drive) past Commerce Avenue, the Fruit Stand, and Spork which are all on the left (maybe 2 minutes in a car from The Victorian Cafe)...

Turn LEFT at the new US Bank (between US Bank and Dutch Brothers Coffee) and go to the parking lot directly ahead. There is a courtyard BEHIND the large reddish-marroonish building before you.

This is Century Center, the festival grounds for the Bend Roots Revival.

Bend Roots Revival
Community Music Festival in its 5th year and “growing” strong

If you have ever had the opportunity to visit Bend, Oregon, nestled in the high desert of Central Oregon near the Cascade Mountains, you know what a unique and wonderful place it is.  In describing this vibrant community words such as energetic, eclectic, peaceful, hip, artsy, natural, diverse and even spiritual come to mind.  For the fifth straight year, September 23-26, The Bend Roots Revival will take these words and set them to music for a four day community celebration of the performing arts.

A project of 106.7 KPOV Bend Community Radio, the Revival is a free annual event showcasing regional performers and educational workshops. Growing by leaps and bounds, this year’s event is poised to breakthrough to the next level with a move to a larger and more versatile venue, Century Center (off 14th in the heart of Bend), and the addition of several new sponsors and local supporters.

In describing the Festival’s new home, event founder and creative director, Mark Ransom indicated “It is our hope that this will be the permanent ‘Fairgrounds’ for the event, and that each season we will continue to customize the space, adding artistic features, staging, lighting, sound and decor that will be used for the Revival—and for other events throughout the year.”

The heart and soul of this one of a kind event is the true sense of “community” embodied by the organizers, volunteers, supporters, participants and attendees.  An assemblage of items from tents and stages to sound systems, art supplies, lighting, signage, and even a solar powered trailer (yes, in 2009 the main stage was powered by the sun!) seem to sprout from the ground each year to provide everything needed for the festival to run.  In reality it is grass roots support, not mystical good fortune which connects the setting, the people, the food, the music and the vibe that bring the festival to life each year.

If you go, don’t worry that the music might not be your style, because there is truly something for everyone.  Blues, jazz, rock, funk, bluegrass, country, singer/songwriter, orchestral space jams and even a touch of classical graced the stages in 2009.  With 70 acts in 2009, this year’s event is faced with the reality that not everyone can be included as the event grows.  As Ransom commented, “The popularity of Bend Roots has definitely made performance slots more coveted.

At the end of the day growth is inevitable for any event which has experienced such immediate success and taps so deeply in to the core of music and arts in the community.  The challenge going forward will be for organizers to hold tight to the values and spirit which continue to define the event while embracing the opportunities growth and change unveil.  The foundation is there, the vision continues to evolve and the music plays on.  As Ransom’s cousin Eric wrote in an original song called “The Revival”, “Tell your neighbor, tell your mother, tell your sister and your brother - tell everyone you meet they got to come on down and see the Revival”.
