Ultimate Oldies Show

The songs you remember, the times you can’t forget and the stories you never knew.

The Ultimate Oldies Show is a weekly, thematic ride with the music, artists, producers, musicians and cultural touchstones of the late 1940’s through the early 1970’s.  Stories, anecdotes, chart information, and trivia complement the recognized, the long forgotten and the never heard rock'n'soul songs of that memorable period.

About Mike Ficher:

Mike shares a passion for the music, artists and fascinating stories, trivia and anecdotes from the rock'n'roll era.  In addition to hosting the Ultimate Oldies Show, Mike performs with Triage, a local improvisation comedy troupe, and the Around the Bend Players, a local theatrical group, specializing in the re-creation of classic old time radio productions.  The financial analyst serves as the voice of Crook County High School sports on AM690/96.9FM KRCO and the voice of the Bend Elks on KPOV, has appeared in several local television and radio commercials (Bend Pet Express, Big Country, Cascade Ensurance Center) and, during the most recent holiday season, appeared on stage as Bob Cratchit in the Tower Foundation and BEAT's production of 'A Christmas Carol' at the Tower Theatre.

 Upcoming Shows:

Bubblegum Music.  Sugary confections from Tommy Roe, the 1910 Fruitgum Company, Ohio Express, the Banana Splits and more from the late 1960's.  Hear entertaining stories from Ron Dante, the phantom voice on the Archies' #1 hit "Sugar, Sugar" and the 1969 top 10 single "Tracy"!

It's the Same Old Song:  Multiple versions of the same song.  Discover the engaging takes different artists offer on a tune!  Includes the rarely-heard, original 1956 version of "Louie, Louie" by the song's composer, Richard Berry.

The Songs of Burt Bacharach and Hal David.  Few songwriting teams in the history of pop music can claim the broad artist lineage of the two prolific and gifted composers.  From their first top 40 hit (Marty Robbin's "The Story of My Life") through many of their most memorable sixties and early seventies compositions, the range of musicians who recorded their songs speaks to their timeless quality and exceptional craftsmanship.  If anyone had a heart, they would be close to this show!

Doo Wop. From the streets of New York to the sidewalks of Philly, enjoy many of the forgotten vocal harmony gems from the rock'n'roll era.  Featuring groups like the Channels, Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers, Kathy Young and Innoncents, the Cardinals and so many more.  Plus learn a little bit about many of these relatively obscure groups.  You'll be singing in the shower!!

Coming soon: Brian Wilson's SMiLE with comments and insight from Peter Ames Carlin, author "Catch a Wave: The Rise, Fall, and Redemption of the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson."

Also, coming soon to www.theultimateoldiesshow.com will be a searchable database of shows and songs plus more info on Mike, a daily calendar of birthdays and trivia!
